34.2.2 Linear stability of the diffusion equation

Convergence of the meridions makes it possible that a horizontal mixing coefficient appropriate for the mid-latitudes will be too large in the high latitudes. In order to derive conservative constraints, it is sufficient to consider the situation in Cartesian coordinates.
