Joe Needoba

Research Proposal

Joseph Needoba | PhD Candidate

I am a PhD Candidate in the Department of Botany at UBC. My main interests are in phytoplankton physiology and biological oceanography. I am also interested in aspects of coastal ecology and coastal zone management.

My project involves the study of the stable nitrogen isotope (15N) and its use as a tool in oceanographic studies. Specifically, I am looking at the fractionation associated with the uptake and assimilation of inorganic nitrogen by phytoplankton. This process has important implications for how stable nitrogen isotope data is interpreted, as well as providing interesting insight into nitrogen assimilation in phytoplankton. Please see my outline of research proposal for more information on the specific experiments.
